深入解读

在帆船时代,航海时如果遇到大风,特别是船只的下风方向有礁石或其他障碍,这种情形就很危险,因为船只可能会被风吹向下风方向,从而触礁。这时就需要向上风方向转舵,使船头朝向上风,使船只顶风行驶,远离下风方向的障碍物。船只的这种行驶状态在古英语中就称为aloof,由a+loof构成,a=on,表示“处于……状态”,loof也是单词luff(逆风航行)的词源,表示“船头朝向上风”。

由于船头朝向上风是为了远离下风的障碍物,因此aloof又逐渐衍生出“远离的”之意,并进一步衍生出“疏远的、冷漠的”等比喻之意。现在,人们几乎只使用aloof的引申义,而不再使用它的本意。比如在街上看到摔倒的老人时,大部分人的做法就是保持aloof。
