4月17日，国家统计局公布一季度全国居民人均可支配收入8493元。一些网友留言，表示“拖了后腿”。
网上搜索“拖后腿”的英文翻译，得到的都是hold back、impede之类阻碍前进的“拖后腿”，也有的文章直接将这样的翻译套用到收入“拖后腿”，显然不合适。如果要用hold back翻译“拖后腿”也可以，那就必须有阻碍的对象，比如：My monthly income holds back the growth of the national average（我的月工资拖了全国人均的后腿）。不过网友口中的“拖后腿”虽然有个“拖”字，但实际上不涉及拖累增长，只是在说自己的收入没有达到人均标准。因此，简单的译法可以是My disposable income is below the national average，要是拖得比较严重的话可以说My disposable income is nowhere near the national average。
稍稍品味一下“拖后腿”这个词，就会发现除了交代没有达到标准这一客观事实外，还有一种让他人失望的意味，因为自己的问题而影响了其他人或集体。在全国居民人均可支配收入的语境下，“集体”对应的就是国家，因此，“拖后腿”的完整译法可以是：I let my country down because my disposable income is below the national average，或者不从国家的角度，而是从说话人自己的角度说：I am ashamed that my disposable income brought down the national average（注意这里如果继续用because my disposable income is below the national average的话，说话人感到羞愧的原因就是自己挣的少，而不是自己的收入影响了全国平均值）。这个译法比let my country down更好一些，因为没有添加“国家”，但传递的含义差不多。还可以用另一种方式表达shame：Blame me for the national average not being higher。
无论是let my country down、ashamed还是blame me，传递出来的自责意味比原文“拖后腿”似乎都重了一些。这时可以考虑confess。根据《剑桥词典》，这个词的意思是to admit that you have done something wrong or something that you feel guilty or bad about。
使用confess时，和上文提到的I am ashamed that my disposable income brought down the national average那句话类似，为了确保说话人confess的原因不仅是个人收入低于国家平均值，而且影响了国家平均值，就不宜说I confess that my disposable income is lower than/ lags behind the national average，而要明确说出“拉低”，即I confess that my disposable income brought down the national average。
