清朝末年，外国商人因鸦片有利可图把大量鸦片运进中国毒害中国人，许多中国人吸鸦片成瘾，19世纪中期进入美国的华工中也不乏有烟瘾的人。 yen 一词就是汉语“烟瘾”（ yenyin ）中“瘾”（ yin ）字的讹用，20世纪初始用于美国英语。
美国人很可能原想以“烟瘾”喻指“渴望”或“嗜好”，但却取错了字，把中国人的“瘾头”变成了英语中的“烟头”了。另有一种解释认为， yen 系由 yearn （渴望）或 yearning （渴望）演变而来。
