Unlocked Door

I sit at home and quietly type, I'm alone. The music is blaring, I have my favorite chips in a bowl and some green tea prepped on my tiny coaster. It's a Saturday evening and I'm spending the night to relax, to relieve the stress and celebrate finishing exams the week before.

The commercials hit the radio, so I spend that time to go wash my face and prep myself for bed. I rush into the bathroom and hum a song in my head, adjusting the water temperature to hot. I scrub my hands and dab my face, closing my eyes to avoid soap exposure.

My parents are both out for the evening, they decided to spend a nice dinner together at the local restaurant. I had just eaten my dinner and was settling for bed.

I'm usually left alone a lot, I'm old enough and I'm trusted. I'm always safe, I always remember to properly take care of myself and be sure to go to bed at an appropriate time.

All of a sudden I hear a thud coming from outside the bathroom. I freeze.

"Hello?" I call out, waiting for another sound. No response.

I quietly open the door and let out a sigh of relief when I see my cat shuffling away from the fruit basket she knocked over. I laughed at her while picking up the apples and bananas, placing them back in the bowl.

"You silly cat, you scared me," I say whilst petting her; she purred and jumped on my couch.

I lifted her and put my cat next to me, I started to clear things up and go to bed. I put my bowl and cup in the sink and rinse them; my Dad always hated when I didn't. I shuffled into the living room once more and picked up my phone from the table.

I looked up to admire the pale moonlight before closing the curtains.

My phone made a huge thud as it hit the carpet.

There was a face was staring back at me.

I don't really remember screaming, but I do remember falling to the ground due to being frightened. I ran for the phone and called 911 but I heard the door creak open.

I turned around with horror and saw a tall, dark man lurking in the back doorway. He didn't move, I didn't either. We stared at each other for what seemed like eternity, but it was only 10 seconds before I ran for the door.

I heard him come for me and I screamed as I struggled to turn the lock on my door and escape. I felt tingles all over my body and managed to open the door, but a clammy hand grabbed me. Instantly I was swung away from the door and onto the floor; his crazy eyes looked at me with a wild expression.

I cried out in horror as he leaped in front of me and slammed the door shut, I could hear the cracking in his back. Since the phone was left on the table, my first instinct was to somehow get over there and make the call.

I crawled quietly as he tried standing up, but he knew what my plan was and ran to the phone. The smash against the wall that the phone made cause me to scream.

He yelled at me to shut up but I ran downstairs before he could get me.

Think, just think, I thought to myself.

I locked myself in the bathroom and decided to try and open it. I made sure the door was securely safe from the intruder and struggled to open the window. The latches were firmly shut and I would need a screwdriver to get out.

I could feel sweat dripping down me as I sat in the corner of the bathroom in defeat, that was my only escape. The pounding on the door made me realize that my life could possibly be over.

It can't be, I have to escape.

Sounds outside the door drifted away until I could only hear faint footsteps upstairs and crashing of objects on the floor. The man didn't have a bag with him, so he obviously wasn't robbing the place.

This man wanted to hurt me, but I wasn't going to let him. I quietly opened the door, minimizing the creaking of the old architecture. I looked around and noticed that nothing was touched down here, not even the flat screen TV.

I sighed of relief that he was upstairs and started to crawl up the stairs and hopefully get out the door before he noticed me; my only plan was to run to the neighbours house and call the police.

I made it to the top and turn my head a little bit to see if I could see the man in the vicinity; no sign of him. I was about to get up when all of a sudden I felt two firm hands grab my ankles and pull me down.

Turns out he tricked me. He was hiding under the stairs.

I screamed and kicked as hard as I could, but he wouldn't even budge as he pulled me further down. I felt tears rushing down my cheeks and decided that it was useless, I had no escape. He set me down on the carpeted floor and started to walk away. i suddenly had an idea.

I bit his ankle as hard as I could and he fell to the ground, moaning and holding onto his bloody leg. I struggled getting up but managed to climb the stairs and rush outside before he could catch me. The sun was blinding but it was one of the last worries on my mind; I just needed to find a phone.

I ran down the driveway and saw that the next door neighbours had cars parked; they were home. Before I could take a second to catch my breath, I felt a stinging sensation in my back and immediately fell to the ground.

I felt paralyzed and couldn't move, I saw blood trickle down the slanted driveway. I was shot. The numbness took over and I struggled to keep my breathing going. I tried to roll over and inspect the wound, but the pain was too unbearable.

I heard the man walk down the driveway until he was facing me, he knelt down with his gun in hand. I tried to call out for help but he put a finger to his lips.

He stood up and started to walk away.

I found my short breathing again and tried to focus on getting up and getting help.

But then the man turned around.

He shot me in the head.
