Nirvana 为佛教全部修习所要达到的最高理想，一般指通过修持断灭“生死”轮回而后获得的一种精神境界。佛教认为，信佛的人，经过长期“修道”，即能“寂灭”一切烦恼、“圆满”一切“清净功德”。这种境界，名为“涅槃”。
不过值得注意的是，涅槃在小乘佛教中是“灰身灭智”，即释迦肉身已死，不复存在，但在大乘佛教中则是“常乐我净”，这就把原来的“涅槃静寂”变得热闹非凡了。因而， nirvana 还可以表示“无忧无虑的境界、天堂、极乐世界”。如若用作贬义，则指“不能实现的梦想”。
