freedom与liberty这两个名词均有“自由”之意。
freedom : 含义广，指任何无限制无束缚的自由自在状态。
- I felt such a sense of freedom, up in the hills alone.
独自一人呆在山上，我感到非常自在。 - Children are allowed much more freedom these days.
现在孩子们的自由大得多了。 - In college, you have the freedom to do what you want.
在大学里，你想做什么就可以做什么。 - Everyone should be allowed freedom of choice (= the ability to make their own choices).
每个人都应享有自由选择的权利。 - Freedom of speech and freedom of thought (= the ability to say and think whatever you want) were both denied under the dictatorship.

liberty : 常可与freedom换用，但强调从过去受的压制、管束下被解救或释放出来，也指法律所承认的特权，如言论、集会等自由。
- For most citizens, liberty means the freedom to practise their religious or political beliefs.
对大多数公民而言，自由意味着可以不受限制地信奉自己的宗教或政治信仰。 - Hundreds of political prisoners are to be given their liberty (= released from prison).
