区别辨析outskirts与suburbs

这两个名词均有“郊区、近郊”之意。

outskirts : 在现代英语中只用这个复数形式，通常指市区以外的地方。

  • The factory is in/on the outskirts of New Delhi.
    这家工厂在新德里郊区。
  • They live on the outskirts of Milan.
    他们住在米兰市郊。
  • Before the train had left the outskirts of London he behaved true to form and began a conversation.
    一如往常，列车还没驶出伦敦郊区，他就开始和别人聊起天来。

suburbs : 侧重指与市区相接或相邻的居住区。

  • Box Hill is a suburb of Melbourne.
    博士山属于墨尔本的近郊住宅区。
  • We drove from middle-class suburbs to a very poor inner-city area.
    我们从中产阶级的近郊住宅区驱车前往市中心的贫民区。
