imminent源自于拉丁语动词imminēre（逼近、威胁），由in-（朝着）和-minēre（威胁）构成。imminent多指不好的事情“临近的、即将发生的、迫在眉睫的”，常搭配disaster / danger / trouble等。另外要注意区别imminent与eminent这两个形近词，后者主要指因专业出众而“卓越的，著名的，显赫的”。
