从词源上来说， adamant 是一个与熟词 diamond （钻石、金刚石）同源的单词，两者都源自于古希腊语 adamas （假想的一种最坚硬的物质）。
其中 adamant 于14世纪中期经古法语 adamant （钻石、金刚石；磁石）进入英语后，原本用来表示“坚硬的物质”以及钻石、金刚石、刚玉等“硬石”，也就是 diamond 的同义词。
不过到了14世纪末后， adamant 开始用作形容词指“坚硬的”，并发展出现在的主要含义表示“坚决的、坚定不移的”，多指拒绝被说服或下定决心不改变主意、意见、决定、立场（stance）等，常意味着意志力如同金刚石那般非凡、坚不可摧，使得诱惑、恳求等无法逾越，比如：
