当他们占据了村里的一个重要战略阵地后,受到法军的猛烈炮火轰击和牵制。英格利斯身受重伤,躺卧在地,但他一直不让人将其抬离火线,并不停地高声喊道:“Die hard, fifty-seventh, die hard!”(拼命顶住!57团,拼命顶住!)。战斗结束后,英格利斯手下579人有438人非死即伤。后人便把57团的勇士们称为“diehards”(拼死抵抗的人、顽强的人)。
