Denomination 源自拉丁语 denominare (命名),是英语单词 denominate (给……命名、称呼……为;以某种货币为单位)的名词形式。14世纪末期进入英语时,仅表示“命名”,到了15世纪中期又衍生表示“名称(尤指种类名称)”,比如:

  • 这家公司改了名称仍在继续营业。
    The firm is still operating under another denomination.

而作为种类名称,既可以指物表示某一类别或等级的名称,也可以指人表示某一群体或集体的名称。其中,首先于17世纪50年代从前者发展出“(钱等的)面额、面值”含义,其次于18世纪初从后者发展出“(基督教)教派、宗派”含义。比如:
