区别辨析flock、herd与swarm

flock、herd与swarm这些名词都有“群”之意。

flock : 主要指鸟群、羊群;也指较小的动物群,也可指特定类型的一人群。

  • a flock of sheep/goats/geese
    一群绵羊/山羊/鹅
  • The shepherd is bringing his flock down from the hills.
    牧羊人正把羊群往山下赶。
  • A noisy flock of tourists came into the building.
    一群吵吵嚷嚷的游客走进了大楼。
  • The priest invited all the members of his flock (= all the people who go to his church) to attend the special service.
    牧师邀请教区的所有信徒参加这一特别仪式。

herd : 一般指大动物的群,尤指家畜的群,也可指芸芸众生的人群。

  • a herd of cattle/elephants/goats
    一群牛/大象/山羊
  • Poor Janine - she just follows the herd (= does what all the other people are doing).
    可怜的雅尼娜——她只是在随大流。

swarm : 通常指蜜蜂、昆虫等的群,也指(蜂拥的)一大群(人)。

  • a swarm of bees/wasps/ants/locusts
    一大群蜜蜂/黄蜂/蚂蚁/蝗虫
  • The dead sheep was covered with swarms of flies.
    这只死羊身上爬满了一群群的苍蝇。
  • A swarm of/Swarms of photographers followed the star's car.
    成群结队的记者跟在这位电影明星的车后。
